The Navy traces its founding back to when the Continental Congress approved the purchase of two armed vessels on October 13, 1775. The original purpose was to intercept British supply ships.
Then the Navy was re-established for the United States with the Naval Act of 1794, also called “An Act to provide a Naval Armament.” It specifically stated how many ships and guns are authorized.
